Create a Western-Themed Fairy Garden

Broken terra cotta pot with cacti and succulents planted like a fairy garden at My Secret Garden in Georgia..

Let’s discuss some drought-tolerant plants that bring all the drama with their fascinating foliage and spectacular spines. That’s right—we’re talking about Cacti and Succulents! These dry guys are low-maintenance and their funky foliage can inspire fantastic garden designs.

A Fun Project with Cacti & Succulents

  • Have a broken pot? Give it a good scrub and fill it partway with soil. Use broken pieces to create levels, gradually adding in soil.
  • Select any Succulents or Cacti you’d like, keeping in mind small plants will be in scale to our fairy friends. Plant them, while watching out for sharp edges. We recommend gloves!
  • Find a brightly lit area for your fairy garden that receives plenty of morning sun to situate your garden.
  • Finally, add in some festive fairy garden accessories like benches, tiny animal friends, a wagon wheel, and more. Voilà!

Cacti & Succulent Care Tips

  • Fertilize succulents mid-summer with a 1/2 strength liquid fertilizer. Yes, they do need food occasionally.
  • Grow them in full sun (unless their tags indicate otherwise). In general, the more sun succulents get, the more colorful they’ll be.
  • Prevent succulents from getting leggy by growing them in plenty of sunlight. If the plants are stretching out, cut them back and move them to an area with brighter light.
  • Always grow in containers or in very well drained soil. Soggy feet = unhappy succulents and cacti.
  • Water when the top two inches of soil are completely dry. And yes, you do need to water cacti and succulents!
